Founder, Soundarapandian Bone and Joint Hospital
(04 July, 1931 – 07 May, 2025)
Dr. S. Soundarapandian was not just a name but an institution in himself, one who transformed the face of orthopaedic care in Tamil Nadu and beyond.
With an illustrious career spanning over six decades, Dr. Soundarapandian founded the Soundarapandian Bone and Joint Hospital in Anna Nagar in 1982 with a singular vision: to make world-class orthopaedic care accessible to all. What began as a personal mission went on to become one of Chennai’s most trusted centres for musculoskeletal care.
A Life Dedicated to Healing and Teaching
Born on July 4, 1931, in Thoothukudi, Dr. Soundarapandian’s academic brilliance led him to pursue MBBS from Stanley Medical College and later MS in General Surgery and MS in Orthopaedics from Madras Medical College (MMC). He furthered his expertise through a Commonwealth Fellowship at Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford, UK.
He served at Madras Medical College as a Professor and Head of the Department of Orthopaedics for over 30 years, where he mentored generations of orthopaedic surgeons with unmatched dedication. His legendary Friday Clinical Demonstrations were attended not just by orthopaedic postgraduates but also by general surgery students, such was the impact of his teaching.
He was instrumental in developing the orthopaedics department at Government General Hospital (RGGGH) and introduced complex procedures like Spine Surgery with Luque Rods and Total Hip Replacement, setting gold standards in orthopaedic care.
Architect of Modern Orthopaedics in Tamil Nadu
Dr. Soundarapandian played a pivotal role in shaping the orthopaedic community in Tamil Nadu. He served as the 5th President of the Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association (TNOA) from 1983–1985, during which he expanded its membership base and academic initiatives. His contributions helped evolve TNOA into a vibrant community of specialists dedicated to sharing knowledge and improving standards of care.
A Legacy Carried Forward
Even after retiring from government service, his passion for healing didn’t rest. He continued to consult patients at the Soundarapandian Bone and Joint Hospital until the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. His sons, Dr. Sivamurugan and Dr. Ravisubramaniam, both esteemed orthopaedists, carry forward his vision with the same compassion and clinical excellence.
Remembering a Legend
Dr. Soundarapandian’s approach was always rooted in clarity, compassion, and clinical precision. His passing on May 7, 2025, at the age of 94, marks the end of an era. Yet, his legacy endures, in every joint healed, every student inspired, and every life uplifted at the hospital he built.
With deepest gratitude, we honour the memory of a man who gave his life to the service of others.
A true beacon of orthopaedic excellence.
